Apple vs Nokia vs Sony vs Samsung vs RIM vs…
The talk around the media world this year has been iPhone, iPhone, iPhone and recently, with the news on Google’s Nexus One, a little bit of Android.
But … iPhone penetration in UK is just 2-3%! So, why has the iPhone been so successful?
Because the iPhone gives a great browsing experience.
It’s not all about the Apps – although Apps do, undoubtedly, have appeal. The success of the iPhone shows is that if you optimise your mobile web site for a smartphone with an excellent browser, you will drive extra traffic.
At mkodo, on a variety of mobile web sites we see
- Apple with c. 32% of activity, then
- Nokia with c.18%, then
- Sony with c.15%, then
- Samsung with c.11% and
- RIM with c.10%
Apple has increased its share of mkodo’s mobile web traffic by 78% in the last four months.
One of the great strengths of the iPhone is that there's only one handset size. This means that you can develop a 'look and feel’ that will be spot-on for a single device-and that will still reach into 40%+ (soon) of your mobile web traffic. This is just one of the reasons that everyone’s talking iPhone.
mkodo see the development of webapps & apps as a key component in mobile development over the next year.
It's worth bearing in mind that Webapps may be more successful then apps as service/product enhancements can be delivered immediately to the User and can optimised to reach across handsets, manufacturers and platforms.
