Apple iOS dominates mkodo’s Top 10 mobile web
15 Sep 2010 by Mark Gibson
Through August, mkodo’s industry leading Intelligent Mobile Platform broke traffic records. So, it seemed a good time to look at what’s going on with Android devices and to see if the media hype that Android will be challenging Apple sooner rather than later is showing signs of coming true.
Whilst I do agree that Android handsets will create a substantial foothold in the market it’s my opinion that this is just as likely to be at the expense of Nokia and Symbian OS than at Apple’s expense – certainly in the next 2-3 years.
The positioning of many of the Android devices within the ‘free upgrade’ sphere does put those devices firmly in competition for Nokia users rather than the high-value Apple users. Also Apple users will continue for the foreseeable future to consume more mobile web services (and application services, of course) than their counterparts in other OS. This is due to the nature of the core of Apple customers and Apple’s mobile promotional focus – for the last 2 years it’s been early adopters who have bought the product to download Apps and because of its unlimited data package and excellent mobile web browsing and UI experience.
Top 10 Devices by Mobile Page Impressions
1. Apple iPhone
2. Apple iPod Touch
3. RIM BlackBerry 9700
4. Apple iPad
5. RIM BlackBerry 8520
6. HTC Desire
7. Nokia 5800d
8. Nokia E71
9. RIM BlackBerry 8900
10. SonyEricsson X10i
This is borne out by mkodo’s Top 10 list of mobile devices for mobile web consumption. From the list three devices from Apple rank in the top four. Let’s not forget that Apple accounts for only c 5% of the UK mobile market in terms of handset numbers and so these figures further demonstrate just how powerful and useful Apple’s mobile devices have become as a day-to-day tool for their user base. RIM, the manufacturer of Blackberry, is still doing well, ranking at number 3 and three times in the Top 10. There are two Android devices in the Top 10 list - the HTC Desire and the SonyEricsson X10i.
